White “Balls” in the Throat: A Scientific Overview of Tonsilloliths (Tonsil Stones)

3. Composition

Studies show tonsilloliths typically contain:

  • Calcium
  • Phosphorus
  • Magnesium
  • Organic debris
  • Bacterial colonies (especially anaerobic species)

Their structure resembles that of dental plaque but in a more compact, calcified form.

4. Clinical Manifestations

Many patients are asymptomatic. When symptoms occur, they may include:

  • Halitosis (bad breath) due to bacterial sulfur compounds
  • Foreign body sensation in the throat
  • Mild sore throat or irritation
  • Visible white or yellow nodules on tonsils
  • Occasional coughing or difficulty swallowing
